2018 Michigan 3-Day: Off to a Great Start!

My first of seven Komen 3-Day walks is done! The Michigan 3-Day was everything I could have hoped for and more. I met amazing, compassionate people. I endured ridiculous heat, and was grateful for the supporters who offered ice water, pickles, otter pops, and encouragement to walkers. I also had a lot of fun.

More Than Pink

There’s a perception that the 3-Day is all pink and fun, but I think it’s important to note that everyone, walkers and crew, is there because breast cancer has impacted their lives. Some of them are in treatment. Some, like myself, have recently lost someone to breast cancer. Family members, best friends, strangers who have become “3-Day friends” for life, colleagues and neighbors, every single person has busted their butts fundraising and preparing to walk 60 miles. And everyone is there to make a difference.

Hot and humid. All 3 days.
We did it! All 60 miles!

Always in our Hearts

One of the most emotional points of the 3-Day weekend is a visit to the Remembrance Tent, where members of the 3-Day community who’ve recently lost their lives are honored. My friend Julie, who passed away on June 22nd, was included this year. Her image evoked intense emotions and some tears, but also became a source of strength when the walk became challenging. I miss her.

Why I Walk

I was interviewed for a segment on local TV station WDIV right before opening ceremonies. I thought they just needed a couple of soundbites, so I was surprised when it ended up being a full two-minute segment! I love it… obviously I enjoy talking about the importance of Komen’s role in breast cancer research and awareness. You can read more about why I walk here: A bold challenge in 2018!

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

A special thank you to some of the people who made my Michigan walk extra awesome:

  • The BC Babes welcomed me as a member of their team, and I am so grateful to captains Beth and Heather for making me feel like I’ve been with the Babes for years.
  • Swan View Inn owner Kris hosted eight out-of-state BC Babes a couple of days before the walk, giving us time to relax after traveling to Michigan. Be sure to check it out if you’re headed to Lake St. Clair.
  • 2017 7-city walkers Shelby, June and Jeryl shared tips, tricks and some awesome stories with me. They are all walking multiple events this year and I can’t wait to see them again!
  • Veteran walkers Jim and George continue to be an inspiration, and are always up for some fun!

Up Next: Twin Cities

I’m really looking forward to my second walk in the Twin Cities, August 17-19. I still have two more walks to fund before November – any donation amount is greatly appreciated. Donate now!
