The Michigan walk is one week from today.
I’m still energized from my 2018 7-city experience, and I can’t wait to get started on the first of five events I’m participating in this year. This update is a bit long, but I hope you’ll grab a cup of coffee and continue reading.
First off, if you haven’t heard the news, there are some major changes coming to the 3-Day program. There will only be four events in 2020: Boston, Chicago, Dallas and San Diego. This means 2019 is the last year the event will be held in Seattle, Michigan, Twin Cities and Philadelphia. As a member of the 3-Day Participant Advisory Council, I know how much consideration went into the decision, and I have to say I think consolidating events is the right thing to do. The time we spend in Michigan, Seattle, and Philadelphia this year will be bittersweet, but I also look forward to some of the positive aspects these changes will bring.
I’m celebrating a major milestone! This is my 10th year participating in the 3-Day! I’ve set a personal goal of raising $10,000 < that is a BIG number, and it’s through your encouragement and donations that I can even dream of reaching that amount (or that many events). I’m about halfway there, and wanted to share some ways you can help – not only with fundraising, but with making the last Seattle event memorable for all the participants.
3-Day Love Shirts: Last year’s shirt design was so popular, I updated it for 2019! There are several styles to chose from, and most come in extended sizes. Get yours here: https://www.bonfire.com/2019-3-day (all the cool kids are wearing them).
Volunteer: The Seattle event (Sept 13-16) is still in need of volunteers, and they would love your help. A couple of hours or all three days, any amount of time is greatly appreciated. Please visit http://the3day.org/volunteer for more information. I will also send out cheer station information right before the event.
“I got this” pins: Five years ago I started making “I got this” buttons to share with other walkers at the San Diego 3-Day – I’ve given away over 1500 buttons to date! This year I made a special enamel pin that will also help me reach my $10K fundraising goal. Pins are $10 each or 3 for $25, and include postage (or hand delivery if you’re in Michigan, Boston or Seattle).
Wine Tasting: We will be hosting a wine tasting in the next month or two, and would love to have you join us! We’ll have excellent wines, tasty appetizers, and fun raffle prizes to win. The details are being worked out, but let me know if you’re interested in attending and I’ll add you to the invitation list.
And you can always make a direct donation! Please don’t forget to submit a matching gift request if your company has a program. About 20% of my fundraising has come through matching gifts in the past, and it’s an excellent way to stretch your donation.
While there are big changes in store for the 3-Day, I still believe the funds and awareness raised through this event are instrumental in finding a cure for breast cancer. Komen’s contributions to metastatic breast cancer research are significant, and I’m pleased to see this is an area of continued focus.
Thank you for your continued support! xo
